What Documents do I need to bring for Taxes?

How do I register as a self-employed business in the UK?

You can register online on the HMRC website (link). You must register before 5 October of the tax year in which you start working as a self-employed business.

When do I have to file my annual Self-Assessment return?

Your Self-Assessment return for the previous tax year must be filed by 31 January (if you do it online).

What expenses can I claim as a self-employed business?

You can claim expenses such as materials, office rent, transport, telephone, internet and even some household expenses if you work from home.

Do I have to pay VAT as a self-employed business?

If your annual turnover exceeds £90,000, you must register for VAT.

How do I set up a Limited Company (LTD) in the UK?

You can register online through Companies House (link). The process usually takes 24 hours.

What are the responsibilities of a director of an LTD company?

A director of an LTD company must keep accounts, file an annual return to Companies House, file tax returns with HMRC and ensure compliance.

Do I need a separate bank account for my LTD company?

Yes, a Limited Company is a separate legal entity and should have its own bank account.

What taxes does a Limited Company pay?

An LTD company pays Corporation Tax (currently 19-25%) on its profits and dividend tax if it is paid to its owners.

When do I need to register for VAT?

If your annual turnover exceeds £90,000, VAT registration is mandatory. You can also register voluntarily if it is beneficial to your business

How often do I have to file VAT returns?

VAT returns are usually filed quarterly, or monthly for some businesses.

What is the Flat Rate VAT system?

Flat Rate VAT is a simplified VAT system where you pay a fixed percentage of your turnover rather than deducting VAT from your costs.

Do I have to register as an employer?

Yes, if you employ staff and pay them more than £123 per week, you must register with HMRC as an employer.

What are the obligations of an employer in the UK?

You must keep a payroll (Payroll), pay tax and National Insurance contributions for your employees and comply with the Auto-Enrolment regulations.

What is the RTI (Real Time Information) system?

RTI is a system for reporting payroll to HMRC in real time – each payment must be reported as soon as it is made.

What are P60 and P45?

P60 – an annual summary of salaries and taxes that an employee receives at the end of the tax year.
P45 – a document that an employee receives after leaving employment.

Can I do my own accounting?

Yes, but this requires knowledge of British tax law. Cooperation with an accounting office helps avoid errors and ensures full compliance with the regulations.
