Moving to the UK and starting a business is a brave step. Here are 5 practical things every Polish entrepreneur should know to get off to a strong start.
Starting a business in a new country takes courage. You’re learning new rules, dealing with a different language, building a reputation from scratch — all while trying to actually run the business itself. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
At ETAXPOL, we’ve worked with Polish entrepreneurs in the UK since 2009. Over the years, we’ve seen what makes the difference between businesses that struggle and businesses that thrive. Here are five things that will genuinely make your life easier.
1. Get your business structure right from the start
One of the most common mistakes we see is choosing a business structure quickly, without thinking about the long-term implications. Whether you register as a sole trader or set up a Limited Company affects how much tax you pay, how you’re protected legally, and how you can grow.
Take the time to understand your options — or speak to someone who can advise you properly. Getting it right at the beginning saves a lot of rework later.
2. Open a dedicated business bank account
This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many sole traders mix personal and business finances. Keeping them separate makes your accounting dramatically simpler, helps you understand exactly how the business is performing, and makes tax time far less stressful.
3. Keep records from day one
HMRC requires you to keep records of all your income and expenses. The good news is that modern accounting software and apps make this much easier than it used to be. The key is building the habit early — trying to reconstruct a year’s worth of records at deadline time is not an experience we’d wish on anyone.
Keep receipts, record mileage, save invoices. It doesn’t need to be complicated — it just needs to be consistent.
4. Understand your key deadlines
The UK tax system has several important deadlines throughout the year — Self Assessment returns, VAT filings, payroll submissions, Corporation Tax. Missing them leads to automatic penalties, which is money straight out of your pocket for no benefit.
At ETAXPOL, we proactively remind every client of upcoming deadlines so nothing ever slips through the cracks.
5. Find an accountant who understands your world
Working with an accountant isn’t just about keeping HMRC happy. The right accountant will help you pay less tax legally, grow your business with confidence, and give you honest advice when you need to make big decisions.
And if you can work with someone in your own language — who understands the specific challenges of being a Polish entrepreneur in the UK — even better. That’s exactly what we offer.
We’ve helped hundreds of Polish business owners build their dreams in this country. We’d love to help you too.
